A Willing Teacher

Blessed is the man that heareth me,
watching daily at my gates,
waiting at the posts of my doors.

Proverbs 8:34

In Proverbs 8 wisdom is painted for us as a willing teacher. We have all been blessed by somebody in our lives who was willing to put in the hours and effort to pass on knowledge or a skill. That person made a lasting impression on you which in turn makes a lasting difference today in the lives of those you influence.

That is the nature and grace of God’s wisdom: it is not hoarded but openly shared from willing teacher to willing student.

What does a willing student look like? He watches and waits for instruction. He is looking to be taught. He has two ears and one mouth and so he listens at least twice as much as he speaks. The fool is so wise in his own eyes he cannot learn anything. The wise are humble enough to remain teachable. The wise are doing more than hearing, they are listening, even as the fool is waiting for his chance to speak. Note the differences.

Praise the Lord wisdom is available to all who need it, the question is whether or not our willing teacher will find us willing students.

If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.

James 1:5
